Freezing fat. Feeling fab.

CoolSculpting® in plain English

How does CoolSculpting® even work?

Fair warning: We're about to get a tiny bit nerdy and explain the science behind CoolSculpting®. But first, we want to acknowledge the question behind your question: Does CoolSculpting® even work? The easy answer is, "Yes." But you deserve more than an easy answer, so we want to qualify our "yes" with an "if."

You're more likely to get results from CoolSculpting® if you have the "right" kind of fat:

Pinchable & Squishable

You can pinch and pull the fat away from your body.

Defined & Distinct

It's easy to see where there's excess fat and where there's not.

Enough... But Not Too Much

If you're too thin or too heavy, you won't see a noticeable difference.

*Results and patient experience may vary.

Before recommending CoolSculpting®, we'll do a free, thorough assessment to make sure it's a good option for you. If it's not, we'll be honest with you. We refuse to recommend something that won't give you the results you deserve.

Let's get nerdy.

The Science Behind CoolSculpting®

How It Works Fat Cells 1

Fat cells don't multiply; they only grow or shrink. (Or die. But we'll get to that in a minute.)

Many people assume that when we gain weight, it's because we've gained fat cells. Not necessarily so! What actually happens is our existing fat cells get bigger. The reverse is also true: When we lose weight, fat cells don't disappear; they simply shrink.

How It Works Belly 1

Some fat deposits are aggravatingly stubborn.

You know this already: Regardless of your super-clean diet and super-dedicated workout routine, some areas just won't tone. Whether you're stuck with a "belly pooch" or "bat wings," a "banana roll" or "man boobs," no amount of try is working.

How It Works Fat Cells 2

If you can't beat 'em, freeze 'em.

Often, fat cells in trouble spots get too large and one of the best ways to eliminate them, besides diet and exercise, is to reduce their number.

The safest, fastest, most effective way* to do that is to freeze them to death.

How It Works Fat Cells 3

CoolSculpting® gets fat cells to chill out. (And when we say out, we mean it.)

Without harming surrounding skin, nerves, or other tissue, CoolSculpting® cools fat cells until they die. Your body's immune system recognizes the dead cells and carries them off to be eliminated.

Often, up to 25% of fat cells in treated areas disappear*. Completely. Forever.

*Results and patient experience may vary.

Remaining fat cells redistribute and trouble spots disappear.*

As fat cells die and exit the building, they leave behind empty "pockets." Over the next 6-12 weeks, your remaining fat cells fill in those areas—evenly, smoothly, and noticeably not pooch-ly.

While more invasive procedures may bring noticeable results almost immediately, they don't give your skin adequate time to respond. That means you're more likely to end up with sagging or loose skin, and we're guessing that's not the look you're going for. With CoolSculpting®, the wait is worth it.

The CoolSculpting® Experience

Unlike surgery and other invasive techniques, CoolSculpting® requires no anesthesia and no downtime.

Before the Procedure

It's natural to feel nervous before your first procedure. But if we're treating you, that means we've done a thorough assessment, and we know CoolSculpting® will be a safe and effective* procedure for you. It's OK to relax!

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment, and bring socks to keep your feet warm. When you arrive, your personal CoolSculpting® specialist will mark the area(s) to be treated, apply a cool gel pad to protect your skin, and then—based on your goals—apply the proper applicator to get started.

Why so many applicators?

During the Procedure

The CoolSculpting® applicator draws in fatty tissue using gentle vacuum pressure. For the first few minutes, you may actually feel a cool sensation in the area being treated. Once the tissue becomes cold, you won't notice a thing.

Most CoolSculpting® treatments take less than an hour, and if you're having multiple treatments, we can often double (or triple) them up, making your total time even shorter. But we're not trying to push you out the door. During your treatments, you'll be free to read, check your email, surf the net, or catch up on your favorite Netflix episodes. Some patients are so relaxed in our private rooms that they may even take a nap! Our goal is to make your CoolSculpting® experience relaxing and enjoyable every time you visit Seattle Aesthetics.

After the Procedure

Once your treatments are complete, you can get right back to your day!

Immediately following the procedure, you may experience some numbness, redness, or mild tingling. For the next couple of days, you will notice mild swelling in the area as your body restores and heals the traumatized tissue. As the affected tissue returns to normal, some patients experience a “pins and needles” sensation.*

Research has shown that any post-treatment discomfort, other than a slightly numb feeling just under the skin, usually subsides within the first week as the new you begins to take form**.
